Donnie Yates went to the Farmers' Market last Saturday to sell some vegetables. Little did he know that a swarm of photographers were about to make him something of a celebrity.
Elizabeth Wulf of Dike captured the eye of the judges in the Sulphur Springs Worldwide Photo Walk contest with her black and white photo submission of Farmers’ Market vendor Donnie Yates’ hands. She won the first place prize from the 81 entries.
Winning the first place prize of an $80 certificate to Texas Art & Frame for the first Sulphur Springs Worldwide Photo Walk was Elizabeth Wulf of Dike with her black and white photograph of Yates' hands taken with her Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera.
“He was just so nice. He even asked if I wanted him to smile,” said Wulf prior to receiving her award from Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance President Perry Altenbaumer Friday.
The contest was very successful, with 81 photographs submitted on Monday from 27 photographers. Taking second place was a local youth, Marc Tuinier, using his new touch screen Sony Tx-5 camera. Tuinier, a freshman at Como-Pickton, captured First United Methodist Church’s stained glass doors from the floor level, framing it with the church pews. He received a $25 gift card for photo processing at CVS.
Victoria Smith of Winnsboro received third place and dinner for two at Muddy Jake's Sports Grille & Pub with her color photo of the “Sulphur Springs” sign displayed near The Millennium Shopper, taken with her Nikon D40 camera.
There were five honorable mentions awarded in the contest that ended Monday at midnight. Winning the honorable mention ribbons were Isabel Reyna with her photo of a bee on flowers; Ian Wells with his photo of a Farmers' Market vendor's hands with okra; Malorie Velazquez with her photo of the rusted street signs of College and Oak with the courthouse in the background; and Carolyn Wetherby with her photo that captured a bird feather resting on the curb. Victoria Smith also received an honorable mention for her photo of a Fender guitar from the entertainment at the Farmers' Market.
Photographers submitted their three favorite photos; an anonymous panel selected the winners. All of the submissions can be found on the News-Telegram's website at mySSnews.com, on the Downtown Business Alliance's website at ssdba.org and on the Facebook page under Sulphur Springs Worldwide Photo Walk.
“We put the possibility of repeating this walk and contest again next year to a vote at Thursday's [SSDBA] meeting, and it passed,” said Altenbaumer. “We truly appreciate all those that helped and donated to its success. We are just so pleased with the event.”
In the coming weeks, the winning photos will also be on display at local businesses.

The results are in!!! I got an email today from the Sulphur Springs Worldwide Photo Walk competition. Overall there were approximately 40 photographers, 81 pictures were submitted, awards were given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, and 3 honorable mention awards....TWO of my pictures placed!!!!! I am BEYOND excited! My winning photos are below:

Awards acceptance pictures will be in the weekend edition of the Sulphur Springs News Telegram. And pictures will be printed and framed and displayed at local businesses to be determined.
